The two main opposition parties firmed up their alliance today, by producing a common budget proposal to the backdrop of bi-partisan placards and both financial spokesmen.

“Today is an historic day. As a result of good and optimistic cooperation, the Social Democrats and Socialist People’s Party are showing the way out of the crisis,” said Morten Bødskov (SocDem).

The main message of the two parties’ initiative to get Denmark out of the crisis, is that of creating more jobs, and thus growth.

“Our initiative will create 15,000 new jobs, among other ways by bringing forward new investment,” says Ole Sohn (SF) adding that by creating new jobs, the state will also save on transfer payments.

Tow other core issues in the plan are investment in education and a wish to create growth in local councils.

While the current government is looking to maintain zero growth, the two opposition parties are ready to give more money to the councils – DKK 1.25 billion extra to maintain current service levels.

When reminded that outlays to local government have grown more under the current government than the Social Democrats had ever imagined, Sohn responded that local government had also been given more tasks than just a few years ago.
