Wednesday was not a good day for the Danish Director Lars von Trier, who had to cancel a gala party for 400 guests, according to jp.dk.

The restaurant concerned refused to hold the party as von Trier’s remarks earlier in the day ‘were not in keeping with the restaurant’s ethnicity,” Jyllands-Posten writes.

The controversy began on Wednesday morning when von Trier aired a certain sympathy for Nazism and Adolf Hitler at a press conference during the Cannes Film Festival, where he is presenting his new film Melancholia.

His comments caused widespread dismay throughout the film community and among Cannes organisers, resulting in von Trier having to apologise for his remarks in a news release. Prior to that, organisers had issued their own news release saying the Cannes Festival had been offended at von Trier’s remarks.
