Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has announced elections for September 15th.

“I have advised the Queen that elections will be held on September 15th,” Løkke Rasmussen said in a televised speech to the nation, adding that the government would not be resigning up to the election.

The prime minister said the main theme of the election would be Denmark’s economic situation.

“In the midst of a global debt crisis, the Danes have a clear choice between uncontrolled debt or lasting welfare. The government has plotted a safe and responsible course for Denmark which must not be endangered,” Løkke Rasmussen said.

“The Liberals and Conservatives go into the election with a wish for broad cooperation across the centre of Danish politics. That is vital for Denmark. It is vital for the every family.” Løkke Rasmussen said.

Opposition politicians were pleased that the election had been finally called.

"This is good news. Denmark has almost ground to a halt. We need fresh eyes for Denmark. We need change," says Socialist People's Party Leader Villy Søvndal.

"It had to come. What is surprising is that the government goes to the election without its parliamentary basis. It shows a government in disarray," says Social Democratic Deputy Chairman Morten Bødskov.

Bødskov was referring to stranded negotiations between the government and its normally loyal support party the Danish People's Party on the government's growth plan. The Danish People's Party has so far refused to support the government's property package.

"After 10 years with Lars Løkke and Pia Kjærsgaard, Denmark has ground to a halt," says Social Democratic Leader Helle Thorning/Schmidt.

"I am looking forward, and all Social Democrats are looking forward to a making a difference for Denmark," Thorning-Schmidt says.
