Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom have now followed the United States and issued updated travel advisories for Thailand, warning of a terrorism threat in the Thai capital Bangkok.

At the same time, Thai authorities have arrested a Lebanese citizen claimed to be affiliated with Hizbollah.

The Danish Foreign Ministry says in its travel advisory that the American Embassy in Bangkok has issued a warning about a possible terrorist threat against areas of the Thai capital in which tourists congregate.

“Danes in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand should keep away from any larger demonstrations and concentrations of the military and police,” the warning says.

All Scandinavian countries quote but do not directly cite the US travel advisory aimed at U.S. citizens in Thailand.

“Foreign terrorists may be currently looking to conduct attacks against tourist areas in Bangkok in the near future. U.S. citizens are urged to exercise caution when visiting public areas where large groups of Western tourists gather in Bangkok,” the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok says.

“U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain a heightened awareness when out in public; be alert for unattended packages/bags in public/crowded places and report any suspicious behavior to the nearest law enforcement personnel. We also encourage you to keep a low profile in public areas, particularly areas frequented by foreign tourists,” the warning says.

Denmark already had travel warnings to several southern Thai provinces and border regions with Burma and Cambodia.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, the Thai security and intelligence service has been investigating a tip-off since before the New Year that an attack was being planned against Israeli interests.

“First we were told that Palestinians were behind it, but it turns out that it was Hizbollah,” he tells AP.

Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapa said further that intelligence reports suggested an attack between January 13 and 15.
