Some 200 people were evacuated Tuesday afternoon when fire broke out in the roof area of a three storey apartment building on Valbygårdsvej in Copenhagen.

“Our first task was to stop the fire from spreading sideways so it didn’t take all of the building. We have managed to do that now we are trying to stop the fire from spreading downwards,” Fire Chief Mads Graversen tells TV2.

Emergency calls about the fire began to come in shortly after 3 p.m., with the fire brigade arriving on the spot shortly afterwards. Those in the building have been evacuated to a nearby high school as local authorities find alternative housing for them for the night.

“There will probably be a lot of damage, and not least water damage as a result of fire fighting efforts,” Fire Inspector Bo Schou tells Newspaq.

No-one appears to have been injured in connection with the fire and there is no immediate indication of how the fire started.
