A parliamentary majority is in the making to change the number of price zones in Copenhagen, thus making longer bus and train trips less expensive.

The Social Democrats and Social Liberals have both expressed support for the Red Green proposal, which may allay some of the fears surrounding the government’s intention to introduce a congestion ring around the capital.

“The Red Green proposal is very constructive because it lowers prices for those who live farthest away and thus those who are most likely to drive a car in,” says Social Democratic Traffic Spokesman Rasmus Prehn to DR News.

“It’s not the people who cycle or walk that we have to get to take the bus or train,” Prehn says.

The third coalition partner, however, wants to wait until more calculations have been carried out before deciding on the proposal.

“An interesting proposal but we have to see the overall picture. Who benefits and who gets nothing? It’s a jigsaw puzzle,” Socialist People’s Party Traffic Spokeswoman Anne Baastrup tells Ritzau.

Red Green Party support is necessary for a majority for the government’s plans for a congestion ring around Copenhagen.

A memo from the Transport Ministry shows that it would cost the state DKK 181 million each year to reduce the number of price zones around Copenhagen from nine to five.
