Denmark has been in the deep freezer since the beginning of February, and although the next few days will see slightly milder temperatures, the mercury will remain below zero during the day, and well below zero at night. On Thursday, the Met Office is also forecasting snow and drifting snow.

“We are going to have to get used to the rather extreme temperatures. As far as we can see in the prognoses, there is no major change in the weather in sight,” says Met Office Senior Climatologist John Cappelen, who does, however, say it is possible that daytime temperatures could crawl just above zero in some areas next week.

Although forecasts are only relatively certain 10 days ahead, the Met Office has tried looking 30 days ahead finding little sign of warmer weather in February.

Temperatures have plummeted since the beginning of the month, with this winter’s record so far at minus 23.1 in Odense on Funen at the weekend.

Cappelen says that it may be cold, but not unusually so.

“It is very cold at the moment, but we have had similar, and even colder, conditions many times before,” Cappelen says.

February’s persistent sub-zero temperatures are the result of even colder weather east of Denmark which is preventing milder weather reaching the country from the west.
