A 22-year-old man has admitted killing three and attempting to kill another four people in a small Greenland settlement, in a killing spree that has shocked the Arctic nation.

The man, who was arrested by police flown in to the west central Greenland hamlet of Nutaarmiut has been remanded for four weeks in a closed-door hearing in nearby Upernavik.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. Those killed were a 75-year-old woman, a 31-year-old woman and an 8-year-old girl all from the same family. Two men aged 31 and 81 were also seriously injured in the attack, with the 81-year-old in a critical condition.

A priest has been dispatched to Nutaarmiut to offer help to the hamlet, which counts some 50 people.
