One of Denmark’s leading architects has won the international competition to design a new museum and community centre in Park City, Utah to return a trademark to the ski resort city that was lost in 1982 when the Silver King Coalition Mining Company building was destroyed by fire.

BIG/Bjarke Ingels Group was one of five architects competing for the Kimball Art Centre’s Transformation Project, proposing a spiralling 24 metre tower constructed of trestles salvaged from the Great Salt Lake railroad.

"One of the things they did very artfully was to tie their vision of Kimball to the history of Park City and made reference to the Coalition building, which they understood, had the power to reorganize the city skyline," former director of design for the National Endowment for the Arts Maurice Cox of the Kimball Arts Center tells the local Park Record.

"At the same time, transform the Kimball Art Center into the very center of the town. I think they really won the hearts of Park City residents by imagining they could have an iconic building in the town again," he added.

Park City Utah is best-known outside the United States as one of the main venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics and is still the official training site for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the town was a main silver producer and sported the Silver King Coalition mine, one of the world’s most famous silver mines.
