The Danish Food and Veterinary Administration says that a consignment of ecological Chinese pine nuts has been withdrawn as the variety of nuts are known to cause dysgeusia or Pine Mouth Syndrome.

According to the FVA, the consignment, which has been sold in outlets throughout the country in 75 gram bags and with a best by date of 30/06/2012, contains Chinese White Pine (pinus armandii) nuts that can cause dysgeusia in some people.

“The nuts are not hazardous to the health, but because of their effect on the sense of taste they are not seen as fit for consumption,” the FVA writes.

The FVA announcement is a reversal of its practice 18 months ago when Pine Mouth Syndrome was diagnosed in Denmark and Sweden. At that time, the FVA declined to recall the nuts as they were not a health hazard.

That practice has now changed following research that has shown that this particular species of pine nut affects the sense of taste of some people.

The FVA is advising those who have purchased the nuts, which were packed by the Biogan A/S company, to discard them or return them to the outlet where they were purchased.
