Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt left the future of her government’s toll ring around Copenhagen hanging in the air Tuesday, promising only that “a good solution” to the inter-party, cabinet strife on the issue would be presented on Wednesday.

“What I am prepared to say is that a very good solution will be presented tomorrow. We are very, very close to having a solution, and it is a good solution that I look forward to presenting tomorrow,” the prime minister said during her weekly news conference.

Asked whether the congestion toll ring would definitely be introduced, Thorning-Schmidt would not guarantee that it would.

“I can promise that there will be a really good solution tomorrow,” the prime minister says.

Tuesday’s statements came following an extraordinary morning cabinet meeting during which the coalition Social Democrats and Socialist People’s Party attempted to reach a compromise on the issue of the toll ring.

Finance Minister Bjarne Corydon (SocDem) and Taxation Minister Thor Möger Pedersen (SocPpl) have been tasked for some time now with finding a model that both parties could accept – but seemingly without success.

The prime minister was, however, categorical that agreement will have been reached by tomorrow.

The toll ring is central to Socialist People’s Party election campaign promises to make public transport cheaper to use.

For the Social Democrats, the toll ring has caused internal splits in the party, with suburban Social Democratic mayors in particular reacting strongly to the project.

The third coalition party – the Social Liberals - have kept out of the fray, saying only that their interest is in reducing the amount of traffic in Copenhagen.
