Following the unrest in Kabul in the past few days, the Danish embassy has been put on lock-down, preventing anyone from entering or exiting the building, Ambassador René Dinesen tells politiken.dk.

The lock-down has been ordered as a result of violent demonstrations that have been taking place in eastern Kabul and at the Bagram U.S. military base in the wake of the accidental incineration by US personnel of copies of the Koran.

“Our embassy is close to the American embassy and so we are taking our precautions. A lock-down is put into effect when we experience the most serious threat level. But there is no threat against Denmark in this conflict,” Dinesen says.

“We are watching the situation and staying at the embassy where we are safe. There is no point in driving through places where there is unrest for meetings, or opening our doors up again and again. We will stay where we are,” he adds, saying the embassy remains fully functional during a lock-down.

Dinesen says he expects the unrest to continue for several days.
