The Copenhagen Diocesan Council has decided to close 16 churches in the capital region with a 17th church hanging in the balance, according to Council Chairwoman Inge Lise Pedersen.

“The 16 churches are certain (Ed: closures) but we still have some questions regarding the 17th,” Pedersen tells politiken.dk.

The names of those churches which are destined to close are to be announced next week, although dean committees and parish councils will have two months to decide whether they wish to try to convince the Diocesan Council that their churches should remain open.

“If they can show that the decision we have taken is wrong, we can recant,” Pedersen says.
