A Danish couple has survived an air crash in Nepal in which 15 of those on board the small propeller aircraft have died.

Both pilots and 13 Indian pilgrims are reported to have been killed, while six, including the two Danes and a stewardess have survived. The couple and four other survivors have been evacuated to a hospital in Pokhara and their condition is said to be stable, according to Ritzau.

The Flightglobal website says that the Agni Air Dornier 228.200 turboprop crashed as it attempted to land at Jomson Airport in Northwest Nepal.

It quotes the Nepal police spokesman as saying that “the aircraft was approaching the runway when it overshot. It was trying to make a turnaround when one of the wings hit the mountain”.

Jomsom airport is a key trekking and pilgrimage hub in Nepal. It is 200 kilometres from the capital Kathmandu and a 20 minute flight from Pokhara, where the injured have been taken by helicopter.

Monday’s crash is the second accident involving a Dornier 228 operated by Agni Air. In August 2010 an Agni-operated Dornier crashed in Makwanpur in central Nepal, killing all 14 aboard.
