The Danish World War I cemetery in Braine in Picardy in northern France will after all receive funding for its upkeep from Denmark.

Plans by Culture Minister Uffe Elbæk to axe funding for the cemetery as part of a government savings drive caused controversy, particularly from Mayor Jens Christian Gjesing of Haderslev in Southern Jutland. Haderslev is twinned with Braine where the cemetery contains the graves of southern Jutlanders who died in German uniform during World War I.

Elbæk told the Parliamentary Culture Committee that he has now found some funds to renovate the cemetery. A wall of memory is also to be erected for the 5,500 southern Jutlanders who died in German service.
