The National Museum and the museums in Vordingborg are in the process of excavating what is being called a sensational discovery of coins in a field on Eastern Møn.

The trove is being dated to the Count’s Feud which took place in Denmark between 1534 and 1536.

So far some 243 coins have been found, but it remains unclear how many coins are in the batch that was found when a man with a metal detector crossed a field.

Most of the existing finds dating back to the Count’s Feud were discovered in the 19th century, with the last major trove taking place in 1927 when 1,545 coins were discovered.

Denmark went through a particularly stormy period from about 1520 to 1536, culminating in the reformation and Count’s Feud. During the period, coins were minted in various locations and for various reasons.

National Museum Numismatist Michael Märcher says the find in Møn will give an indication of the political and economic conditions during the period as well as the economic structures that were in place at the time.
