A German yacht with a broken rudder, and which had begun to take in water, broadcast a mayday message this morning before all nine aboard abandoned ship and took to the vessel’s liferaft.

The Bornholm Express ferry was first to reach the scene and remained with the group until a rescue launch from Denmark’s Baltic island of Bornholm arrived on the scene.

“When it arrived, only 10 centimetres of the hull was above water,” The duty officer at Admiral Fleet Denmark (SOK) says.

It remains unclear why the 50-ft. yacht developed problems and eventually sank.

All nine safely boarded the rescue craft to be taken to Rønne on Bornholm.
