An earth tremor measuring 4.4 on the open Richter scale was registered early this morning in the Kattegat between Denmark and Sweden, prompting eastern Danes and southern Swedes to contact the geological authorities. No damage has been reported in either Sweden or Denmark.

“We woke up with the house shaking and the walls creaking,” Anne and Mathias Elm from Ängelholm in southern Sweden told the Swedish news agency TT.

Denmark often has minor earthquakes that are so small they can only be registered by sensitive geological equipment. The last somewhat stronger earthquake in Denmark was in 2010 when a 4.7 quake could be felt throughout eastern regions of the country.

Today’s quake took place in the Kattegat waterway, some 20 kilometres southeast of the Danish island of Anholt.

The National Geological Centre in Denmark says that no aftershocks are expected.
