The number of accidents and road deaths continues to fall in 2012, according to the Road Directorate.

“The figures showed a positive trend in 2011, but 2012 looks like being a year in which less than 20 people die in traffic each month. That has never happened before,” says Directorate Project Leader Stig. R. Hemdorff.

2012 has built on improving figures in 2011. So far this year 96 people have died in traffic incidents, compared with 121 in the first seven months of 2011.

The number of injured has also fallen, with July in particular as a positive month.

“It’s not easy to give a sure answer as to why. But there are possibly a variety of reasons,” Hemdorff tells the national news agency Ritzau, suggesting that improved safety in modern cars and changes in the driving behaviour of specific transport groups may be contributing factors. Young people in particular are driving more slowly, he says.
