Mark Sladen, who has been the director of one of Denmark’s leading cultural institutions, has decided to give up his post in connection with the merger of Kunsthal Charlottenborg and the Royal Danish Academy Schools of Visual Art.

As part of the merger, Sladen was offered a position of Exhibition Director, a post he has declined.

“The merger between Charlottenborg and the academy marks the beginning of a new chapter for the organisation, and innovation and new ways of doing things will be beneficial. I have enjoyed my time in Demark and have made a lot of friends, but it seems it’s the right moment to move on,” Sladen says.

Charlottenborg has experienced a drop in the number of visitors for some time. In 2011 some 23,000 visited the establishment, only some 8,000 of whom were paying guests. In 2006 some 55,000 visited the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Charlottenborg reopened its 1,400 sq.m. in March 2011 after refurbishing.

A contemporary art centre, Kunsthal Charlottenborg says of itself: “Kunsthal Charlottenborg is one of the largest and most beautiful spaces for contemporary art in Europe, presenting an ambitious programme of exhibitions and events with a strong international focus.”

Before coming to Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Sladen was director of exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Britain.
