An elderly lady in Elsinore seems to have been keeping wild rats as pets, with rat catchers finding her house infested with the rodents, according to Helsingør Dagblad.

According to the report, rats had gnawed through the floorboards and built nests throughout most of the ground floor and cellar. In the pantry next to the kitchen, pest control found enough droppings to fill five wheelbarrows.

“We were led to the building when a relative contacted us to help get rid of what he thought were mice. The owner was in hospital with a bad back at the time and when our man arrived at the scene we found rats, not mice,” Erik Månsson of the local council pest control unit tells Helsingør Dagblad.

Månsson says that in his 40 years on the job, he has never seen anything like what was found in the villa.

After two months of clearance, the unit had either caught, poisoned or shot at least 203 rats, but suggested there could have been up to 250 in the premises.
