Some 10 flats in a building in Kolding have been destroyed following a fire on Sunday evening which appears to have started in a children’s room.

Some 120 people were evacuated from the building and those whose flats were not affected will be unable to return to their flats today.

“We may be able to get some practical items for them,” says Kolding local police spokesman Verner Pedersen.

The fire, which developed heavy and toxic smoke during Sunday evening, is now under control, but still smouldering. During Sunday evening people in some areas of Kolding were told to go inside, close windows, doors and ventilation systems. The air in and around the area is now, however, said to be clear.

“Four people were taken to the casualty ward, but no-one else has been hurt,” Pedersen says.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, although eyewitnesses say that a group of boys had been playing with fire.

“We don’t yet know what caused the fire but we know that it started on the top floor in a children’s room,” Pedersen says.
