The government’s plan to cut back on subsidies to the Gamle By in Aarhus has caused some consternation elsewhere in Europe's museum community.

Museums in both Britain and Sweden have written letters of support to Den Gamle By in an attempt to help stop plans to cut DKK2.8million in state subsidies to the historical site, according to Jyllands-Posten.

“I don’t know whether you realise it, but I and my colleagues in the European Union are impressed by Den Gamle By and Director Thomas Bloch Ravn,” writes Richard Evans, Director of the Beamish open air museum near Durham in Northeast England.

Evans says he sees the Aarhus team as being some of ‘the most innovative, visionary and creative’ in the world.

Stockholm’s Skansen has also issued an appeal in favour of Den Gamle By.

Den Gamle By’s Director Thomas Bloch Ravn says he hopes the appeals will cause politicians to reconsider, adding that Den Gamle By will not be able to maintain its buildings properly if the cutbacks are imposed.
