From today onwards there are new rules as to the types and lighting effect of bicycle lights in Denmark.

Lights must shine straight out front and back and be visible at 300 metres and shops are no longer allowed to sell battery-driven bicycle lights that do not shine the required distance for at least five hours after purchase.

Here are the main rules in a new bicycle law that came into effect today.

  • Lights must be mounted so that they shine straight out back and front. No hanging diodes or lights that shine downwards or upwards.
  • Lights must be visible at 300 metres.
  • Battery lights must be able to shine brightly for at least 5 hours after purchase.
  • Lights or light packaging must display the light’s runtime and information on how many hours batteries can fulfil requirements. The same information must be available in all types of advertising for the product.
  • Lights must also be visible from the side.
  • Front lights must be mounted with a slight inclination so they do not dazzle oncoming traffic in areas without street lighting.
  • Those who do not adhere to lighting rules are liable to a 700 kr. fine.
