Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen says that he would like to be able to call a referendum on Denmark adopting the euro during his current term in office.

“That is my goal because I want Denmark to be a full member of the European Union,” Løkke Rasmussen says in Brussels following a meeting with the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Løkke adds, however, that two requirements must be in place before a referendum can be held – a resolution of the future of EU treaties, and broad political support. This latter probably refers to getting the support of the Socialist People’s Party for a referendum.

“It’s impossible to set a deadline, but it will hopefully happen in this electoral period,” says Løkke Rasmussen.
