The atmosphere at Bistro Bacchus Vinbar in Viktoriagade street is as calm as a pub on the outskirts of Vanløse. You can hear each other talk. There’s jazz on the system, old pictures of Paris on the walls and a piece of nervous red velvet acts as a curtain for one of the windows.

On a random Saturday night there are three guys at the bar slowly drinking themselves under the table. They order a glass at a time and chat with the sommelier.

She knows a lot about wine, and what she doesn’t know she goes in to look up. Towards the end, only their heads are visible above the bar.

One of them talks of a case of Pomerol he once bought from a waiter at Den Røde Pimpernel. The other points to a label sporting a picture of a château where he says that’s where his wife will be delivering his first child. Both giggle and slide down a little further.

It’s calm. Take your friend, girlfriend or date. Wine costs from DKK 35 to DKK 175 for a glass. Bottles from DKK 225 to 1,825. Tapas plates and hot food are available until midnight.

Bistro Bacchus Vinbar, Viktoriagade 8, 1655 København V, Tel 33 22 67 97. Open Mon-Thu 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fri-Sat 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
