The government is looking to change the laws governing the use of CCTV to allow local councils to permit cameras wherever they see them appropriate to improve safety and help prevent crime.

The new law, which is to be put out for hearings today, will also allow the extended use of CCTV in volatile housing estates and soccer stadiums.

“I believe it will increase the feeling of safety for citizens if they know that someone is keeping an eye on what is going on, for example in pedestrian streets and larger squares,” says Justice Minister Brian Mikkelsen.

“And I know that it will make it easier for the police to solve crimes,” he adds.

Under current rules, police permission is required in order to install CCTV surveillance cameras in towns and cities. Under the new rules, local councils will have the authority to issue permits.
