The Social Democratic Leader Helle Thorning Schmidt is cutting short her summer vacation and is due home in Denmark this afternoon according to the SDP news service.

Thorning-Schmidt has been under increasing pressure over the past week following disclosures that she had provided diverging information to the authorities regarding the amount of time her husband is in Denmark. The number of days spent in Denmark during a year determines whether or not someone who works abroad should pay Danish taxes.

The SDP leader’s husband Stephen Kinnock, who is the son of the former British Labour Leader Neil Kinnock, works in Geneva in Switzerland.

The issue was compounded this week after a right of access application to the Justice Ministry by the B.T. newspaper, provided information that a conveyance to joint ownership application for the couple’s house for her husband, gave a different residence frequency than that provided to the tax authorities.

Thorning-Schmidt has been on vacation for the past week with her family, and has not been available for comment, apart from a written response to the Ritzau news agency, in which she accepted that the information provided had been wrong, and that the correct information on her husband’s residence frequency would be provided to the authorities.

“The information that was sent to the Justice Ministry in the autumn of 2009 regarding conveyance (Ed: to joint ownership) to my husband of our house has shown itself not to be precise. It was a careless mistake, which I, of course, regret,” Thorning-Schmidt wrote, adding she will rectify the mistake.

“We will now send the final tally of my husband’s stays in Denmark. We will leave it up to the Justice Ministry’s overall evaluation of the information provided as to whether the Justice Ministry’s previous decision will be affected,” Thorning-Schmidt says.
