The latest statistics from the National Institute for Public Health show that 860,000 adult Danes drink more than the recommendations of the National Board of Health.

The Board recommends a maximum of 14 units per week for women and 21 units per week for men.

Men drink too much
A memorandum entitled 'Alcohol consumption in Denmark' shows that more men than women exceed the unit level and that 16-24 year-olds and 45-64 year-olds exceed the limit more frequently than 25-44 year-olds and those over 65.

High income groups have a slightly greater tendency to exceed the recommendations than lower income groups. Singles without children also tend to exceed recommendations.

What's a unit?
The National Board of Health says that a unit of alcohol is roughly the equivalent of 33cl of beer, 12cl of wine, 8cl of fortified wine and 4cl of spirits. A bottle of wine containing 12 percent alcohol is roughly 6 units.
