The latest opinion poll on EU affairs in Denmark shows a majority of Danes would reject the euro if a referendum were to be held today. Similarly the previously so steady majority in favour of giving up opt-outs on legal and defence cooperation seems to have disappeared.

According to the Rambøll poll for Jyllands-Posten, 45.2 percent of Danes would vote to maintain Denmark’s own currency while 43.7 percent would be prepared to adopt the euro. In January, 49.8 percent said they were prepared to accept the euro.

Apart from the euro issue, support for getting rid of Denmark’s legal and military opt-outs has also dropped, with equal numbers now for and against removing them.

Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said after meetings in Brussels yesterday that he hoped to be able to call a referendum on the euro during the current electoral period.
