More asylum-seekers to DK

In the first quarter of 2009, the number of people seeking asylum in Denmark increased by some 54 percent.

The latest figures from Statistics Denmark show the number of people seeking asylum in Denmark continues to rise.

The first quarter of the year saw 928 asylum-seekers, with the largest number from Afghanistan (219) and Iraq (128). Compared to the 2008 quarterly average of 602, the increase in numbers is at 54 percent.

Fewer achieve status
In the same period, the number of people actually achieving refugee status and a residence permit fell to 118, among them 34 Iraqis, 25 Afghans and 15 Iranians. In 2008, the average quarterly number was 311.
