Jonathan Richter of the FC Nordsjælland soccer club, who was struck by lightning during a training match on July 20, has had to have his left leg amputated from under the knee, according to a statement from his family.

Richter, who lay in a lengthy induced coma immediately following the accident, agreed to the amputation of the lower part of his limb, which was severely damaged by the lightning strike.

The operation is said to have improved his general condition considerably and he is soon to be moved out of the intensive care unit at Hvidovre Hospital.
