The vision of converting the Kødbyen meat market into Copenhagen’s very own answer to New York’s Meatpacking District seems now to have taken off.

The bare slaughterhouse area is well on the way to becoming a new power centre in the city with cafés, galleries, restaurants and 24-hour access. At the moment, it seems that something new opens every other day in Den Hvide Kødby (The White Meat Market).

We recommend that as a minimum you take a peep inside the angular and rather international V1 gallery, its neighbour KarriereBar – itself a work of art, visit Tante T – an old fashioned tea salon, drink a bottle of beer at the funky Jolene bar which is run by Icelanders, look into the Dask photo gallery, taste fresh Danish fish and study the jelly-fish aquarium at Fiskebar or round off with a glass of wine in the relaxing atmosphere of the PatéPaté café.

Kødbyen is listed, which means that all of the establishments have the original white butcher’s tiles on the walls.

Kødbyen, Flæsketorvet, 1711 København V
