There’s new management with a love for brown panelling and red lamps at the old butcher’s pub in the Meat Market.

Before the pub closed, Mesteren og Lærlingen was a local steak café for people who worked at the Meat Market. Butchers and potato peelers came by and used it as their local canteen. Things have changed and some DJs and party-makers have changed the relaxed place into a pleasant low-fi den, in what has become a funky Meat Market.

Mesteren og Lærlingen offers lots of old Danish music, soul, rhythm & blues and a bit of jazz. The beer is cheap and traditional and the clientele laid back. If you pass by on a Sunday afternoon you can be lucky and experience one of the bar’s flea markets.

Simon Dokkedal, who among other locations also puts on the music at the Den Sorte Skole DJ collective, is one of those who took the initiative to reopen Mesteren og Lærlingen. During the day, he makes e sure that the bar is a relaxed place where you can come by with your friends without having to be too smart or trendy.

You’re also allowed to smoke indoors at Mesteren og Lærlingen – something of a rarity in Copenhagen’s night-life.

Mesteren og Lærlingen, Flæsketorvet 86, 1711 København V. Open Wed and Thu from 6 p.m. – midnight. Fri and Sat from 6 p.m. – 2 a.m.
