The vast majority of those detained by police during yesterday’s demonstrations have been released again with only 13 still behind bars. A total of 968 people were detained by police during Saturday.

The police spokesman says at least three of those still in custody are to be charged with violent behavior towards officers

There has been criticism of the police operation in detaining 913 demonstrators in a pincer trap targeted at the tail end of the main COP15 demonstration. Police moved in when stones and fireworks were thrown.

Under new rules adopted prior to the COP15 meeting, the period police are able to detain people without charge has been raised from six to 12 hours.
