Torrential rain and heavy winds have prevented some 200 Danish charter tourists from leaving La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro in the Canary Islands.

Airports have been closed to traffic, with many unable to get home for the Christmas holidays.

Startour, however, says that weather conditions are improving and most will be able to get home today.

The Danes are among some 4,000 passengers who have been unable to get home. Some 10,000 others have also been hit by power outages in La Palma.
