The biology, geography and geology faculties at Copenhagen University were blockaded this morning by students demonstrating against cutbacks.

Students are reacting against budget cutbacks at the university and what they see as a lack of Danish commitment to education at the same time as countries such as India and China are increasing their commitments.

Students claim that some 40 percent of biology lecturers will lose their jobs over the next three years, while the Institute of Geography and Geology will lose some 30 percent.

The Danish Student Council says that Danish universities need a rescue package.

“Copenhagen University is bleeding. There is an acute need of an aid package to stop it bleeding. It would be a scandal if biology, geography and geology had to close,” says Council Chairman Mikkel Zeuthen in a statement.
