The latest figures from Statistics Denmark show January’s consumer price index rose 2 percent compared to the same month last year following a December year-on-year rise of 1.4 percent.

According to Statistics Denmark, higher prices for tobacco as a result of increased duties, were particularly to blame.

“Over the past year prices for Alcoholic Drinks and Tobacco have risen most at 6 percent, predominantly as a result of higher prices for tobacco,” Statistics Denmark says, adding that transport costs year-on-year rose 4.6 percent, among other reasons as a result of increased petrol prices.

Month on month, the figures show that prices rose most for alcoholic beverages and tobacco at 5 percent while Other Goods and Services rose 1.8 percent, with increased prices for insurance and financial services.

Some goods did drop, however. Clothing and footwear dropped 10.4 percent as a result of the sales. Communication dropped 2 percent as a result of falling prices for telecommunication services and equipment and Housing Items and Services dropped 1.3 percent, particularly as a result of lower prices for furniture and housing equipment.
