A young man is to be presented in a remand hearing today after police found a small arsenal of weapons and ammunition in the basement of a block of flats in the Gentofte suburb of Copenhagen.

Among the illegal weapons found were sub-machine guns, a Kalashnikov, several pistols and revolvers as well as ammunition.

Fears that there were explosives in the cache caused police to evacuate the building as police and army bomb squads investigated the basement room.

Police say the young man detained in connection with the cache has not previously been known to them, and is not known to have connections to Copenhagen gangs.
