PM: All opt-outs to be voted on

The prime minister agrees with his foreign minister – all of Denmark’s EU opt-outs should be voted on at the same time.

Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen says that when Danes eventually go to referendum on EU opt-outs, all of the opt-outs should be taken at the same time.

“It is probably right to take them all at the same time,” Løkke Rasmussen says, echoing the views of Foreign Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party Lene Espersen.

The prime minister, however, has not yet decided on the best method of presenting the issue to voters – whether they should have a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ option on a collective ticket, or whether they should be allowed to vote on each opt-out separately.

“We will have to make the decision as to whether it will be a pools coupon or a single vote when that time comes,” Løkke Rasmussen says.

A referendum on the issues at stake was to have taken place during the current electoral period, but the government has postponed the idea in order to be able to send all opt-outs to referendum at the same time. Denmark’s economic situation makes it impossible to enter EU economic cooperation at the current time.

“I would like to have the possibility of voting on all of it at the same time. And since we cannot vote on the euro now, we have postponed the vote. The euro vote is in many ways the most important opt-out,” Løkke Rasmussen tells Ritzau.

Denmark has opt-outs to European cooperation in the fields of defence, economy, legal affairs and union citizenship.
