The Danish foreign ministry and its embassy in Bangkok have issued a warning to travellers in connection with demonstrations expected in the Thai capital, particularly on Sunday.

Thousands of demonstrators are expected to take part in anti-government weekend demonstrations designed to force Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to resign and reinstate the former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.

Some 50,000 members of the security forces and police have been commandeered into Bangkok to control demonstrations.

“As a result of the security risk in connection with the demonstrations, as well as traffic problems expected in Bangkok, travellers are advised to stay away from those places where there are large crowds and demonstrations, and in particular in the areas we have mentioned,” the foreign ministry website says.

The website mentions four particular areas: The Prap Khabot Monument in Lak Si, Lumpini Park, Din Daeng and King Taksin Monument in Wong Wien Yai. It adds that a further four suburban areas are expected to be affected - Nonthaburi Provincial Office, Samut Prakarn Provincial Office, and Pathumthani Province Klong 3 and 4.

It goes on to say that those in the popular Khaosan Street in Bangkok should also be careful as the area is close to what is expected to be the main demonstration.

“Travellers, not least in Bangkok, should stay away from demonstrations and large crowds and follow the situation through local media and Danish or local travel companies. Generally, travellers should be aware of the risk of violent clashes, including bomb explosions and shootings, particularly in and around areas where there are demonstrations,” the foreign ministry says.
