Behind Fisker Inc. stood the Danish car designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker, who grew up in Allerød north of Copenhagen but has spent his adult life outside the country’s borders, where he has helped design several successful cars for BMW and Aston Martin.

These were impressive luxury cars, some of which were used in a James Bond movie, but the cars on Henrik Fisker’s resume were only for the wealthiest car buyers. With the Fisker Ocean, he was set up for a popular breakthrough – and for a long time, it seemed that it was going to happen.

Around 63,000 people paid a deposit of $250 for the car. And in Denmark, the enthusiasm was particularly great. The first Fisker Ocean in the world was delivered in this country, and nearly 1 in 16 Ocean cars has been sold to a Dane. But when the first expectant customers received their new cars in 2023, a number of features that had been promised were missing. The big mystery was: What went wrong for Fisker? Several observers have suggested that the company’s meltdown could be due to rising interest rates or that the rival Tesla has lowered the prices of their cars.

But the reality is also that Fisker Inc. has been destroyed from within by brutal management, acording to a number of former employees at Fisker Inc. that Politiken has spoken with.

They all say that the route from a billion-dollar company to now being on the verge of bankruptcy has two main reasons. One is Henrik Fisker, and the other is his wife, Geeta Gupta-Fisker, who is also a director in the company.

»They have created a company that is based on fear. One had to be cautious if one pointed out that there were problems with the cars or the company’s finances. Those who did were dismissed or, in the worst case, fired«, says a former executive in the company, who, like the other former employees, has signed a non-disclosure agreement and therefore is not able to come forward with their criticism.

Politiken has spoken with seven former employees who have worked at Fisker Inc. during various periods from the beginning of the Fisker Ocean’s development until this year. This includes several executives and engineers with in-depth knowledge of the car’s components and software.

Meet The Fiskers

Henrik Fisker is 60 years old and grew up in Allerød, north of Copenhagen. He was educated at the Art Center in the city of Vevey in Switzerland, and he has worked as a designer for BMW, Aston Martin, and Ford.

In 2007, he founded the company Fisker Automotive, which produced a hybrid car with the backing of a state loan of several hundred million dollars. The company went bankrupt in 2013, which triggered criticism from members of the U.S. Senate, who summoned Henrik Fisker to a hearing.

In 2016, Henrik Fisker founded the company Fisker Inc. together with his wife Geeta Gupta-Fisker. The company went public in 2020 and was worth more than 50 billion Danish kroner in 2021.

The car owner described in a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, how the abrupt braking caused the car to swerve violently and then spin around its own axis while crossing two lanes on a highway just outside of Dallas, Texas.

By a stroke of luck, no one was hit, and it was possible to tow the car away from the highway and onto a nearby parking lot.

Here, the car owner recorded two videos showing that the car’s brakes had caught fire. According to the employee who provided Politiken with access to the videos, the videos were shared and discussed internally among staff at Fisker Inc. because they were so shocked by the incident.

Politiken has not been able to identify the car owner, but we have seen his communication with an external legal advisor as well as his report to the NHTSA.

Several potential safety issues with the cars are currently being investigated by the NHTSA. In April alone, they received 43 complaints about faults and safety issues from American Ocean owners, and they have three ongoing investigations into the car’s safety.

According to the American authorities, there have been at least nine incidents, including one accident with injuries, where the regenerative brakes have not functioned when the car was driving on surfaces with poor traction such as over train tracks or on a slippery road.

The problem has been known internally in the company for a long time and should have been resolved before the car was released to consumers, say the two former employees with extensive knowledge of the process.

»I have test-driven hundreds of Fisker Oceans over time, and it has been a recurring problem. You get a shock when it happens because you try to brake, but the car instead accelerates«, says a former employee.

»If employees pointed out critical faults with the cars, Henrik and Geeta would get angry and silence them. No one was allowed to talk about production problems. Henrik Fisker and his wife, Geeta Gupta-Fisker, were proclaimed by Forbes in 2020 as »the billionaire power couple taking on Tesla« and they have been ranked among the 2,000 richest people on Earth.

The two have jointly led Fisker Inc. since 2016 – with Henrik Fisker as CEO and Chairman of the Board, and Geeta Gupta-Fisker as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.

When Fisker Inc. was at its most valuable, the couple were dollar billionaires, but since then the company’s value has fallen by more than 99 percent. At the end of April, Fisker Inc. was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange because its shares were worth so little. And the company itself has stated that there is a risk it will go bankrupt.

Henrik Fisker has already once built a car company worth billions that subsequently went bankrupt. This happened when he founded Fisker Automotive in 2007, which counted among its customers Leonardo DiCaprio and Crown Prince Frederik, who is now King of Denmark. The company only managed to produce around 2,500 of their luxury hybrid car, the Fisker Karma, before it went bankrupt in 2013 due to a lack of funds and production problems.

Back then, Henrik Fisker told Forbes that the company’s shortcut to success was that they would outsource the production of the cars and develop the Fisker Karma in just 2.5 years instead of the 5 years it normally takes in the car industry. Geeta Gupta-Fisker has a Ph.D. in biotechnology and many years of experience in the finance industry in the UK and the US, but she had not worked in the car industry before she took the job as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer at Fisker Inc.

According to the former executives and employees, Geeta Gupta-Fisker was good at negotiating prices with suppliers, but they felt that she lacked an understanding of the deeper technical specifications of the components she ended up choosing.

»It was impossible to change her mind. She didn’t listen to us. It was all about money, and the decisions she made ended up costing the company dearly«, says a former employee.

The agreements with suppliers meant, among other things, that they ended up with subcomponents for the cars that did not have the correct software and technical specifications, the employees say.
