They had no idea where the playful canary came from. But suddenly, it was there. Right in the middle of the trampoline. To the great delight of Mohammed, Amira, and Adam.

The other day, a playful canary flew over Aabenraa

Today, Mohammed starts school, and he’s looking forward to it. He lost his entire family when Israeli missiles hit their home in Gaza. Recently, his new family had a special visitor—a bird dropped by.

Last Thursday morning, a canary flew over Aabenraa. Perhaps it passed over Rema 1000, the OK gas station, and the large parking lot that serves as the local center of this neighborhood. Maybe it came from a nearby garden. It’s impossible to know. It was a beautiful bird. White with hints of yellow. It chose to land on a trampoline where three children were dancing and listening to music from the MGP (Danish TV music competition for children, launched in 2000).

The children are named Mohammed, Amira, and Adam, and they are 10, 7, and 5 years old, respectively.

Inside the small townhouse, three adults were talking. It was Adam and Amira’s father, Hussein Shaheen, who is Mohammed’s biological uncle. Then there was Line Skøtt, who is Adam and Amira’s mother, and Politiken’s journalist.

As we sit there, Adam comes running in.
