“I clearly condemn Russia’s decision to recognize the breakaway Georgian republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent,” says Foreign Minister Per Stig Møller in a statement. He adds that the Russian decision directly contravenes the principle of Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
These have been recognized by the United Nations, including in Security Council resolutions, and confirmed in the Helsinki Accords, the foreign minister says.
