Gender appears to be a decisive factor in the length of sentences meted out to criminals in the lower courts. Several judges have reported that in some types of cases, they have a tendency to give milder sentences to women than to men who have committed similar crimes.
Ritzau asked more than 200 judges from all of the lower municipal courts to answer several questions about equality.
