Danish local councils are to be permitted to spend a billion kroner more than envisaged next year in public works on schools, sports facilities and retirement homes following an agreement between the government and the Danish People's Party.

The agreement, which was reached overnight during budget negotiations, allows councils to spend six billion kroner on construction in 2009 and seven billion in 2010. A special extra fund totalling DKK 200 million has also been agreed on for needy councils, as well as a DKK 100 million fund earmarked for faulty school lavatories.
