Theoneste Gagosora has been convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal of plotting the massacre of ethnic Tutsis and Hutus in the Rwandan genocide that cost the lives of 800,000 people. He has been sentenced to life in prison but is to appeal.
Iraq The Iraqi authorities have arrested 23 defence and interior ministry officials for planning to revive Saddam Hussein's Baath Party, which is banned in Iraq. There are also claimed to have been indications of the early stages of planning a coup.
