Women on Waves attracted worldwide attention in 2004 when the organisation’s vessel Borndiep, which offers information on contraception and can provide safe abortions in areas where abortion is banned, was blocked by two Portuguese war ships while sailing in international waters.
“The Court held unanimously that there had been a violation of Article 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights,” the ECHR said in its judgement.
