Somali pirates who attempted to hijack a Maersk-operated vessel at the weekend, used a new tactic, claiming to be naval assistance, in order to get the captain to slow down.
According to Maritime Danmark, pirates fired at and attempted to stop the high freeboard, vehicle transport vessel Hoegh Pusan – the former Maersk Taiki. The captain immediately called for naval assistance on the open radio channel 16 and began to increase speed.
