The government is looking to change the laws governing the use of CCTV to allow local councils to permit cameras wherever they see them appropriate to improve safety and help prevent crime.

The new law, which is to be put out for hearings today, will also allow the extended use of CCTV in volatile housing estates and soccer stadiums.
